Here is my account of Saturday evening, November 15, 2008.

My Girlfriend’s birthday was last Thursday, the 13th. The plan was to get together with her family and a couple close friends on Saturday evening for dinner. The Basque Hotel on ‘F’ Street & Fresno, downtown; was decided on, as she really liked the food and her family had been there many times in the past.

basque_hotel.jpg

She and I arrived, completely disregarded by the staff and had to find our way through several rooms to a table way in the back corner. The decrepit elderly woman waiting on us was immediately annoyed with our party’s presence and barely even paid attention when we placed our orders. This restaurant serves family style in several courses. First bread and soup was brought out, before any of us could even get half way through the soup it was forcibly removed from us. This pattern repeated for the next 3 courses brought out to us. We were graciously allowed about 2-3 minutes to shovel down each course before the food was removed without our permission.

Finally the main course came out. I ordered a medium rare rib eye steak, which when served was not only very well done, but also not a rib eye, it was a $1.99 skirt steak that you can get for breakfast at any local Mexican restaurant. The thing was so tough that my steak knife could barely penetrate it. I just couldn’t stomach the though of spending $20 on something of that poor quality, so I politely showed the waitress that the steak was not how I ordered it and she irritably took it back to the kitchen. A couple minutes later she returned with a new steak. This steak was entirely raw. We all agreed that it was cooked that way with the spiteful intentions of “he wants it cooked less; we’ll show him how little we can cook it”.

I absolutely love rare meat, but this was disgusting. I’ve had seared steak and this is not what it looks like. The bloody cold center was black with congealed, old blood. I informed the waitress that the steak was inedible and to just cancel that order, and that I’d pay for what I’d eaten to that point, and nothing more. That offer was refused. At that point it became an arguing match between our whole table and two angry waitresses insisting “oh, you’re GOING to pay for that steak”. Finally they agreed that I didn’t have to pay for it, but the whole table was told that we could NEVER return to the restaurant (as if we ever would).

Immediately after that, the original grouchy waitress came and removed everyone else’s steak while they were still eating it. Most people had more than 3/4 of their steak left on their plates when they were taken. I should also mention that NOBODY was happy with their overcooked, pan fried, unseasoned, grade-D meat.

So here’s the best part. As we all sat there in disbelief at what had just happened, out of the corner of my eye, I see a man (Fermin Urroz, the Owner), swaggering towards us with a mean look in his eye. As he approaches our table he angrily shouts “Which one of you pieces of sh** are sending my steak back”, among many other profane personal verbal attacks which I will omit from this account. I announced that it was me at which point he was standing over me spewing insults from his toothless flap of a mouth in his broken English. At which point I stood up, being about 18″ taller than him, he kind of quieted down, at which point my girlfriend started yelling at him too. She was very upset because it was her birthday and he was ruining it. Next, he proceeds to grab her face with both of his hands in a violent, aggressive manner. We were forced to physically restrain this psychopath as he was lunging toward her in furious blind anger.

Needless to say, we immediately called 911 and the police had to deal with it from there.

Oh yeah, and one last thing, there were roaches, and all the dishes, silverware and glasses had had old encrusted food framing greasy fat finger smudges all over them. It was disgusting.

And in case anybody doesn’t believe this, I have an Event Number from Fresno PD corroborating the story

We cannot let local businesses get away with this kind of service. One would think that with the economy the way it is businesses would have to start reaching new levels of great customer satisfaction for repeat business. Who the hell does this owner think he is?

2039 is recieving a new competitor right down the street, and it looks like a 2,000 lb gorilla named Hero’s Sports Lounge. Across the street from Joe’s Steakhouse (try the tri-tip sandwich, amazing) is the completely overhauled new hot spot for downtown employees and visitors. The owner has done everything imaginable and spared no expense in turning one of downtowns eye-soar buildings into what looks like the nicest downtown business addition.

Sticking to the theme of Sports Town, early indications sugges that the Hero’s Lounge may indeed be the galvinizing point for the entire Sports Town District. The building will be 9,000 sq ft of fun for anyone willing to make the trip. After seeing the interior first hand, its safe to say many will make the trip once word spreads.

The art director of Hero’s is Conrad Jimenez, who gave us some of the interesting tidbits of Hero’s.

Some of the exciting features are the bar, which is called the Penalty Box, which will have polished white granite on the bar tops to represent the ‘ice’. The booths which will serve as places to sit and enjoy the ambience will have plasma TV’s above, so sports fans can get their daily fix of NBA, MLB, NFL etc.

The upstairs are will serve as a quiter, more loungy vibe and will be the location for small concerts and performances. Conrad’s vision is to record the performances and live direct them to all of the flat screens positioned around the club, alowing everyone a view of whats going on.

The frontage serves as an example of the amazing transformations that are possible for other atiquated storefronts. The building was restored to show exposed brick, with green borders being painted around the windows and entrance. Hero’s is not even open yet and they have an extremely eye-catching sign.

We will be conducting a more thorough interview with Don the owner, and Conrad the designer very soon.

Until then here are some exciting pictures of the amazing transformation. Extreme Downtown Makeover Edition!!

Fresno Fusion’s favorite up-and-coming artist, Robert Amador, was called up with only one day notice to whip something special up  for us for the CVBI Stock Exhange. We met the day before the event, and like I would tell Reggie Bush regarding how to run the ball, I told Robert to just do his thing. Incorporate the logo in the piece, try to have something to do with downtown Fresno. That’s it. That day Robert gathered the supplies, and backpacked around downtown for some inspiration. This is what he came up with.

Thanks again Robert, you da man!!

2039 Ultra Lounge has a new sign outside, posted on the corner of Kern Street and Van Ness Ave.  The sign isn’t very big, but it’s noticeable by the green glow and large numbers.

I guess this indicates that 2039 is making money and plans to be around for a while.  I count it as a positive overall.

Take a look at the new sign here:

Chuck Dimes is one of Fresno’s diamonds in the rough.

Before moving here, I did my homework on who’s who of the city. I was into Planet Asia long before receiving my orders here; but after digging deeper, I found so much more dope music that I’d never been aware of: Fashawn, Turbin, Bravo, Grafik. But Chuck Dimes never came across my ears; that is, not until Fash’s One Shot One Kill release show.

Hearing “Every Emcee” for the first time was nuts! You know it’s a crazy song when you can repeat lyrics word for word after hearing it just once. That’s the kind of music that withstands the test of time.

Since then Mr. Dimes has been on my list of music to stay up on. He recently released a new mixtape, simply titled To The Left. The tracks on the tape take cues from his early hip hop influences growing up on the West Coast.

Without further a due, here it is, in all of its O.G. hip hop glory. Enjoy.

Fresno rapper Fashawn has been a hot topic around Fresno Fusion and the hip hop community. His next album, “Boy Meets World” will be entirely produced by Exile, an LA based producer that made some major noise when he produced an album for Blu.

Here is the video for “Our Way” featuring LA rapper Evidence. Rumor has it our boy Fashawn is going to have this video

Check it out!

Fresno’s very own Fresno Metropolitan Museum is on it’s way back to full functionality and with a whole lot of renovation work to make it even better than before!

They’re planning a 55+ hour Grand Reopening Celebration that you might just want to attend.  Here’s the Press Release & Schedule:

Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art & Science

“Three years of jackhammers, bulldozers and excavators will come to a close, as the Fresno Metropolitan Museum reopens to the public in its newly renovated building on November 13, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. with a grand reopening ceremony.

The historic structure at 1555 Van Ness Avenue in downtown Fresno was the focus of an extensive renovation and reshaping of the entire Museum complex, as two additions constructed in 1936 and 1951 as well as the Museum’s longtime administrative office building were razed. In addition, the Museum’s picturesque courtyard was the subject of a complete makeover, with the result a green space approaching the size of a football field.

The renovation affords the Museum the opportunity to open the building’s fourth and fifth floors for the first time ever. The fourth floor will serve as a multipurpose space supporting special programs, educational activities and will serve as gallery space on occasion.

The fifth floor will house the Met’s administrative offices, marking the first time in the Museum’s history that its offices will be housed in the same location as its exhibition space.”

Fresno Emcee Populus just finished a 44 day tour with his DJ, DJ Hoppa and his record label Broken Complex.  Populus had time on the road to write these blogs/journals about his time on the road so here what he had to say.

3. day one will need to be reenacted w/ action figures and crude animations upon our return .

also …

does anybody know ?
a bird dropping out of the sky , dead , right in front of your van … that’s a ‘good’ omen , right ?

…had our most-nicely set , last night ,and it showed .
… one of our party ,got his girl boosted , by an uber-german cowboy , with what mine-us would later describe as ‘ creamy, butter-churning , hip motions. ‘
